The Faces of Newgate: A Humanitarian Vision Seen Through the Heart of an Artist
Artist Anup Bhandari began the Healing Art Project in 2011 at Newgate Mission, a day mission that serves Longview's homeless and marginalized populations. Since then, Anup's art classes have become a treasured part of life at Newgate, and the Healing Art Project is a regularly featured exhibit on Longview's Art Walk circuit.
In 2017, Anup asked one of Newgate's beloved community members, Ms. Ruby Floyd, if he could paint her portrait. Ms. Ruby's response to the finished piece inspired Anup to paint other Newgate community members and to eventually compile his work into this project.
Anup has developed meaningful relationships with his portrait subjects over the years, and because they know him and trust him, what he has captured here is a beautiful blend of world-class art and a powerful glimpse into the lives of our fellow humans that many of us don't often have the opportunity to see.
